Forty Years…Forty Stories... Co-founders Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, never imagined back in 1969 exactly what four decades would look like – the challenges and the disappointments, the victories and the successes. Rather, they were driven by an immediate cause. Inspired by the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., their response to the call for civil rights was to confront old prejudices about Blacks being unsuited to classical dance and to create equal access and opportunity for those who might otherwise have been denied a place in the ballet world. From its humble beginnings 40 years ago in the most unlikely neighborhood, Dance Theatre of Harlem has become one of the most respected dance institutions in the world. Throughout the 18-month 40th Anniversary celebration, DTH will post on its website (www.dancetheatreofharlem.org) at least 40 stories on a rotating basis that will enthrall its reader with the wonder of all the people who have passed through DTH’s doors…dancers, students, administrative and production staff, accompanists and faculty members. Find out about the many fascinating individuals whose lives were forever transformed. Become a Member! We are offering a special 40th Anniversary introductory Corps de Ballet membership at $40, for new members. However, you may join at any level.
